| 16H BASS HORN
Ever since I designed my first bass horn in 1980, I realized that well designed bass horns could sound like no other bass speaker. My first attempt was using JBL 18” drivers coupled to 17 foot long folded horns. They were indeed gigantic. The impact and slam of those horn speakers made my sound company at that time famous with the London reggae bands and notorious with the venue owners since they could rattle anything including beer glasses, walls and eyeballs! Later in my career as a speaker designer I was asked to build a speaker for the Japanese hi-fi connoisseurs. Like me, those guys love really big horn speakers. So I created the Platinum Air Pulse Omni-Horn speaker. A more than massive (1200-pound, $175,000 a pair!!!) sculptures that were awarded the highest level of award by the Japanese Audio-Bible “Stereo Sound” as the finest loudspeaker in the 100-year development of home speakers.
When is came for me to start PJB, I wanted to include all that I knew about speakers for the discerning bassist and that included horn design – the 16H. The 16H is not like any other bass horn speaker. Often these types of designs have one common flaw. For economy’s sake they have a horn path that is simply too short to propagate the lowest fundamentals that a modern bass can deliver. The 16H with its 12 foot long, rear folded-horn can reproduce any fundamental with ease including basses with that deadly F# string below the bottom B. The 16 Piranha™ drive units equal the cone area of 4x10’s or 2x15’s but with much more force since the combined motor strength of these drivers is equal to more than the very best 8x10’s. The dynamics, clarity and sheer low end grunt goes beyond what is thought possible.
